Chronic Illness Problems 07/07/2012

  • Screaming and yelling at me to do something when I’m telling you that I am physically incapable will not make my body work for you, just saying. What your yelling will do, however, is agitate me, cause me stress, and make me feel worse about not being physically well.

  • Guilt tripping someone for circumstances out of their control is generally not a great way to approach someone struggling with a flare. Oh, and it accomplishes absolutely nothing productive or positive.

  • Yes, I am having a bad day. Yes, I have spent the past few days in bed. Why? Because I’m in a bad flare. This does not mean I am in bed because I am depressed or lazy, it means I am in bed because lying down is the most comfortable position for my swollen, inflamed body.

Yelling, guilt tripping, and invalidating someone as discussed above will drive the chronically ill person away, and if they are having a bad day, will make their day significantly worse both mentally and physically. Don’t be yet another stressor on an already stressed body. Chronic illness aside, this type of behaviour is no way to solve problems or deal with frustration in any situation.
